Karen Yoshua, Artizan’s Creative Director, put this together after speaking with 10 women, a mix of influencers and women who just genuinely know how to get dressed. The goal was simple: understand how they actually accessorize a black dress depending on where they’re going.
We’ve compiled what they told us, organized by occasion. Most sources will not specify occasions and will leave it at that. But in reality, what changes your jewelry isn’t the dress, it’s the plan.
A black dress at brunch isn’t styled the same way as one for a wedding or a night out. So instead of overcomplicating things with rules about metals or necklines, we kept it grounded in real life: where you’re going, what you’re wearing, and what actually works.
1. Brunch
Brunch is that in-between moment where you want to look put together, but not as if you tried too hard. Think relaxed black dresses, cotton, linen, maybe something slightly oversized or flowy.
This is where layering does most of the work for you. A layered necklace set instantly makes a simple dress feel styled, without needing anything else. Add stud earrings to keep things balanced, and you’re done. No need to overthink it.
Mixed metals also feel very natural here. Gold and silver together give that “I just threw this on” energy that actually looks really intentional.
JEWELRY PIECES TO WEAR
Here's what Merve Kozlu wears for a relaxed daytime look:
-
Layered necklace sets (2–3 chains at different lengths)
-
Stud earrings
-
Mixed metals (gold + silver)
2. Formal event
For formal events, the black dress usually speaks for itself. Long, structured, and elegant. You don’t need much to make it work.
This is one of those cases where less really is more. Clean, minimal jewelry in silver or white tones keeps everything sharp and elevated. A tennis necklace is the go-to here, subtle, but it catches light in the right way. Add a tennis bracelet or a simple band ring and stop there.

Here's what Anuki Natchkebia goes for when it's black tie:
-
Tennis necklace (one or two very delicate layers)
-
Tennis bracelet
-
Simple silver/white metal ring
3. Day events
Day events are where you can have a bit more fun. Garden parties, birthdays, outdoor celebrations, there’s more flexibility here.
Gold tends to work best in daylight. It feels warmer and stands out nicely against black without looking too harsh.
This is where charms and layering come in. A statement charm necklace becomes the center of the look, and you can build around it with another chain. Then add bracelet stacks to bring everything together.
Also worth noting: stacking photographs really well was something that came up more than once.

Here's what Renee Ash layers up for a daytime event:
-
Charm necklace (main piece)
-
One additional chain for layering
-
Bracelet stacks (all gold)
4. Winter
Winter changes everything because your outfit isn’t just the dress anymore. You’re dealing with coats, knits, turtlenecks, layers on layers.
That’s exactly why jewelry becomes more important, not less.
Against all that black fabric, statement necklaces and layered sets stand out more. This is the moment to go a bit heavier than usual. Mixed metals work especially well here because they add contrast and texture, and they show up constantly in this season’s winter jewelry trends.
You can easily layer up to 3 or 4 necklaces without it feeling like too much.

Here's what Tata Nagebashvili wears when it's all black and all layers:
-
Statement necklaces
-
Layered necklace sets (up to 4 pieces)
-
Mixed metals
5. Sporty and casual looks
This is your errands, coffee runs, casual days where comfort is the priority, but you still want to look like you tried (just a little).
The silhouette matters more here. A long necklace helps create that vertical line that makes everything feel more styled, even if the outfit is simple.
Pair it with gold hoops, and you’re good. It’s minimal, but it doesn’t feel plain.
JEWELRY PIECES TO WEAR
Here's what Julia pairs with a sporty black dress:
-
Long necklace (pendant or simple chain)
-
Gold hoop earrings
-
Metal can be gold, silver, or mixed, depending on the dress
6. Night out
Night out is the opposite of minimal. This is where your jewelry is supposed to show up.
Think pieces that catch light: stones, shine, movement. This is where simulated diamonds, moissanite, cubic zirconia, and anything reflective really work.
You can stack rings, layer bracelets, go for statement necklaces, and add drop earrings. It’s not about restraint here; it’s about impact.

-
Ring stacks
-
Statement necklace (with stones)
-
Long or drop earrings
-
Tennis bracelets
7. Date night
Date night sits somewhere in between the subtle and the intentional.
You want detail, but not overload. The easiest way to get there is with three necklaces of different lengths. A choker, a mid-length chain, and a longer piece create that cascading effect that draws attention without being too much.
Add a few rings and keep everything in gold for a softer look.
JEWELRY PIECES TO WEAR
Here's what Emily Hinckley layers on for date night:
-
3 layers of gold necklaces (short, mid, long)
-
3 rings (2 on one hand, 1 on the other)
8. Summer
Summer is where everything shifts again, but this time because of comfort.
Heat changes how jewelry feels. Rings start to slide, necklaces stick to your skin, and suddenly, less really is more, for practical reasons.
Karen Yoshua, Artizan’s Creative Director, keeps it simple: a bracelet stack, one ring, and an anklet. That’s it.
She also mentioned that when traveling, she prefers sets because they’re easy to mix and match without overthinking outfits. Necklaces still work in summer, you just want them light, easy, and low-fuss, which is exactly what we’re seeing across summer necklace trends.
JEWELRY PIECES TO WEAR
-
Bracelet stacks
-
One ring
-
One anklet
-
Coordinated sets for easy styling
"Bracelet stack, one ring, an anklet. That's my summer formula. Comfort first, always."
- Karen Yoshua
9. Wedding guest
Weddings are one of the few moments where jewelry can feel a bit more refined and intentional, especially when you’re figuring out how to accessorize for a summer wedding.
Hair is usually styled, often up, which naturally draws attention to the ears. So the focus shifts to statement earrings.
From there, everything else stays delicate. A thin necklace, one or two rings, nothing too chunky.
JEWELRY PIECES TO WEAR
Here's what Marissa Garrison wears to a wedding:
-
Statement earrings (stones like cubic zirconia or emerald)
-
One dainty necklace
-
1–2 delicate rings
10. Black leather dress
Not exactly an occasion, but it needed its own section. A black leather dress already has attitude, so the jewelry shouldn’t play it safe. This is where contrast works best.
Mixing a gold chain set with a silver tennis necklace creates that layered look that really stands out against leather. Add a gold bangle and a diamond band ring to finish it off. It’s bold, but still controlled.
JEWELRY PIECES TO WEAR
-
Mixed-metal layered necklace set (gold + tennis)
-
One gold bangle
-
One diamond band ring
Final verdict
If you’ve ever felt like you needed a “rulebook” to style a black dress, this is your sign that you don’t.
What stood out the most from these conversations is how much the context matters. The same dress can feel completely different depending on where you’re going, and your jewelry is what shifts it. Sometimes it’s layered and relaxed, sometimes it’s minimal and polished, sometimes it’s all about making a statement.
There’s no fixed formula, but there is a pattern: start with the occasion, then build from there.
